High street inspiration

[Pic credit: New Look]

When I first saw this dotty lace panel blouse on New Look's website, I immediately saw the similarity it had with the vintage-style dress I bought from Asia Fashion Wholesale which I wore here*click*.
It became the inspiration behind today's outfit.

I think my dress looks pretty cute as a blouse, no? It's a bit longer than my skirt, so you can actually see it peeking out from underneath, but I reckon that's still pretty cute.

Sorry, I haven't been posting regularly, but I promise to put up more posts very soon. I hope everyone's been well.

I'm sure you would like to know what you're voting for, so here is an entire post dedicated to my submitted style coordinate.

Today, I'm going to introduce to you a fashion trend called Ojikawa/Obakawa style. According to Cheesie at Cheeserland.com, Ojikawa and Obakawa literally translates to "Grandpa cute" and "Grandma cute". How cute, right?

The magazine scans above were from the January 2011 issue of Popsister, an extremely popular magazine in Japan (and Asia). It showcases some Ojikawa and Obakawa style inspirations and from what I gathered, there's a hint of old English and a bit of vintage touch in this trend. However, the Japanese have taken that and given it their famous cutesy or kawaii twist.

It is not strictly vintage fashion as we know it because trust me, there are a lot of vintage lovers in my Uni and I've noticed their fashion is not quite like the Ojikawa/Obakawa style. The trend is much more quirky and even when dressed like an old Grandpa, one should still manage to look cute.

News from Asia Fashion Wholesale

Hey, guys!

I am not sure if you guys read my Asia Fashion Wholesale review here *click* from some weeks back. In any case, I just wanted to share this piece of news I found on their website with you.

So I was writing up a more detailed blog post on them and went to their website to do a bit of research. As I was browsing, I saw this tiny line on top that read, 'Important notice and big apologize'. Wondering what this could be about, I clicked on it only to see what I deem to be quite a major issue. I've attached the full statement below (spelling/grammar errors and all) because I wanted to quote them word for word incase I misunderstood anything.

*******************************************

Important notice and big apologize

We are very sorry that a dismission employee stole our customers' emails and use the emais illegally.
That guy joined another company and that company tried to cheat our customers with below mean tricks:
1) They registered very similiar domains (only change one or two words of our website domain).
2) They copied our web pages and photos (in order to let/cheat you think they belong to our company).
3) They sent SPAM emails to you to cheat you to place order and pay money.(Please don't risk to do business with such company.)

Please make sure you open our page from your favorite sites, or enter http://Asia-Fashion-Wholesale.com/welcome into the browser.
1) Please don't register or login from the fake pages.
2) Please don't place order or make payment on the fake pages.
3) Please don't click the link from the SPAM emails.
4) If you experience failure login at that fake website, you are recommended to modify your member password.

We appreciate your information and suggestion very much if you could provide more details.
It may take a very short time for us to resolve this horrible problem.
Hope you understand the current situation and we promise we never disclosed your information at any conditions and we will avoid such problem in the future.
We will try our best to offer good product and nice service for you as before.

As I said on Twitter, spam emails I can deal with because I think people are smart enough not to open spam AND click on the links inside anyway. In fact, I did notice I have been getting some emails from what I thought was AFW, but upon closer inspection, I now realized that the sender is actually Asia-FashionS-Wholesale. They seem to have just added an 's' to the name of the fake account. Luckily, Hotmail marked these emails as Spam, so I chucked them all without even looking.

What is worrisome is perhaps what else this ex-employee (and his croonies) can do. I am more concerned about other forms of breaches of security/privacy.

Personally, I am not sure what else AFW could have done better as I am not too familiar with the workings of the company. But I feel they could have at least notified their customers in a better way. Putting a tiny link on your website is hardly enough when anyone could have easily missed it.

Anywayz, I just wanted to spread the word to be more careful if you're purchasing from AFW or any other online shop for that matter.

Incidentally, I'm doing my dissertation on Internet Marketing (Pros and Cons) and this has been quite an interesting case study for me.

My vintage-style dress

Vintage-style polka dotted dress: Asia Fashion Wholesale
'J' Scrabble ring: DIY gift from the boyf
Mary-janes: Spain

Wooo...check out my hair blowing in the wind. At least it's not blowing across my face or blowing in 20 different directions so that I look like Medusa's Asian sister. The hands at the side look a bit awkward, though. Never know what to do with my hands in outfit shots.

The dress is my favourite out of the bunch of clothes I got from my AFW haul. It's so vintage-inspired and the colour is really pretty. When I was browsing around the website, I very nearly chose the safest option; black. But as my mouse hovered over the 'Add into Basket' button, I chided myself, "Stop being so boring and get something you don't already have in your wardrobe!". So, voila! Best decision of the month!

By the way, Pocky posted a comment quite awhile back, asking for the link to this dress on AFW. I tried to look for it, but I think it's sold out. However, I found the red version. If you're still interested, click here. I'm sorry I took so long, but you didn't leave an email or some other way of contacting you. Hope you read this, though :)

The ring is something I've always wanted. I've seen it in vintage and craft fairs, but I couldn't bring myself to fork out £5 for a Scrabble tile when I have an entire box of them sitting at home (There's only one 'J' tile, though). So for my birthday, the boyfriend actually ordered the tile off eBay and got a packet of those metal rings for DIY. He also bought other deco stuff and glued it on to those metal rings and presented me with a whole bunch of accessories. That's a good few pounds saved.

Went out for lunner at Wagamama, today. Was actually headed to a lovely vegetarian cafe we frequent about once a month (our way of deluding ourselves that we're getting a bit of detox from all the meat), but we were late and pretty much all the food was gone. Was literally stumped, but my tummy was already growling so to Wagamama we went. I always find the food there quite average in general, but their Japanese curry is pretty good. I ordered the vegetarian Yasai Katsu Curry which came with a rocket salad side. It was quite yummy.

Hope you guys are having a lovely weekend!

Saturday shopping

So Saturday was shopping and movie day. It's been months since I properly shopped in stores. Yes, I've done quite a bit of online shopping *guilty*, but I've not actually stepped foot into shops, thanks to my insane workload and pure laziness.

Anywayz, Saturday was successful shopping-wise because I managed to buy some birthday gifts for a friend and also got some stuff for myself.

I love my new lace up floral brogues. Look at the pretty heart cut outs! Love little, little details like these. I'm thinking of changing the laces to ribbons. Will have to find the right colour first, though.

The original price was £24.99, marked down to £10.00, but I got it for only £8 because I had a 20% discount voucher! Bargain or what?! I love a good buy!

The camisole and accessories are from H&M. The leather butterfly hairclip reminded me of a necklace I saw on ASOS and it inspired me to turn it into a necklace. I could also just clip it on to my leather cube necklace. Those animal rings are ones I've been looking for since last year, but they were sold out everywhere. So it was a pleasant surprise to see a set hanging nonchalantly there. I'll show them off properly in a future outfit post *wink*

Faux fur fox tail: H&M
Sneaker heels: New Look

After shopping, we met up with some friends to watch X-men: First Class. I'm not a fan of superhero movies, but the boyf, like most boys, likes them. The only superhero movie I liked was The Dark Knight and only because it was a deliciously dark psychological thriller. So now that I've written a little disclaimer about how the movie isn't of my favourite genre, please don't throw daggers at me when I say that it was just so-so. But hey, whatever rocks your socks.

Any-jimmy-who, I'm announcing it here to make it official...I'm on a 2 month shopping ban! I mean it! No, seriously, believe me! I don't think I'm an overzealous shopaholic and I always only buy cheap stuff, but I think I need to slow down a bit and actually use/wear the things I've bought. So yes, 2 months, starting from today.

To a wedding

 Maxi dress: Asia Fashion Wholesale
NOT Chanel bag: Blogshop
Heart locket: Gift from the boyf
Bangle: Vintage fair

This was what I wore to attend a friend's wedding reception a couple of days ago. The wedding was absolutely beautiful and the newlyweds looked as much in love as when they first got together. The bride, whom I knew first, looked stunning in her wedding gown and I actually teared up when I saw her walking down the aisle *sniff*

Do you cry at weddings?

The maxi dress is from my AFW haul. It's very comfy and made of pretty good material. I really wish it was a bit longer, though. I didn't post any full-length shots because I think it makes me look short in pictures especially if the camera angle isn't flattering. However, I really like how flowy it is and it looked fine in the mirror so I wore it anyway.

I could get some lace or fabric to add to the length, but I can't sew to save my life.

Boyfriend's birthday

Cream lace dress: Asia Fashion Wholesale
Crochet waistcoat: AX Paris
NOT Chanel handbag: Blogshop
Rings: Handmade by the boyf

My boyfriend's birthday fell right smack in the middle of my exams and sadly, I couldn't really do anything to celebrate it. I did surprise him with presents and a cake, at midnight, though.

To make it up, I surprised him again a few days later. This time, I took him all the way to Manchester (which is about an hour's train ride away) for a special Malaysian meal he has been craving for since...forever. Sadly, Malaysian food is very hard to come by in most parts of the UK and our little city doesn't offer it either.

He had no clue whatsoever and thought we were just heading to town. As soon as he got on the train and found out we were heading to Manchester, he started making wild guesses (jokingly), "Oh, oh, are we going to so-and-so's house? Is that where the surprise is?", "Is so-and-so waiting at the station?" and "Oh, did you get tickets to Wembley?" (it was the Champions League final between Man United and Barcelona the next day). My boyfriend is a HUGE fan of Man United. But heck no, the tickets for that game cost hundreds of pounds and besides, they were long sold out!

Anywayz,  so I said, " Hey, you're hyping up your surprise so much that when you actually arrive, you're going to be disappointed " Haha...that shut him up. But no, he was really happy that I was bringing him on this secret adventure.

The outfit above was what I wore for the dinner. Sorry about the cartoon face, I was in a hurry and the lighting, angle and expression is just all wrong.

Did you recognize the dress? Yep, it's the one from my AFW haul. Actually, upon wearing it again, the inner lining is actually very short, so I had to wear a full slip underneath. I've amended my rating and my review in the original post. Still, it's quite a lovely dress.

Ah, but wait. There was a 3rd surprise! The very next day, I got a bunch of our friends to come over and we surprised my boyfriend again with yet another birthday cake. This was kind of an epic fail because he bumped into them before we could set up the cake and stuff hahaha

So there, 3 surprises in all. Not too shabby, eyh? :)

Asia Fashion Wholesale haul

Here's my haul from Asia Fashion Wholesale (AFW)!

*Ratings are based on the quality, the price and how much I like the item.
When reviewing, I keep in mind how much I paid for the item and if the material/workmanship (a few loose threads are not a problem to me) is worth it. Then, I think about whether the item is actually wearable.
The original stock photos are on the left and my photos are on the right*
UPDATED: I'm 161cm (5' 3")

[Stock photos credit: http://asia-fashion-wholesale.com/]
I have been looking for a long-sleeved, off-shouldered sweater for a while now and was about to buy this exact same one on eBay, when I spotted it on AFW. Good thing I waited because the one on eBay was much more expensive.
Rating: 9/10
Review: This sweater looks exactly like the picture. The material's just okay. It's very light and thin which makes it very comfortable to wear. I'll have to wear a vest inside, though. It's supposed to be loose-fit, so no problems with the sizing.
UPDATE: I wore it here*click*

Rating: 8/10
Review: This lace maxi dress looks pretty much like the picture. Pretty good material. The lace is quite pretty. It has an inner lining although I'm not sure why it stops just below the knee. The dress itself reaches just above my ankles. Personally, I would have preferred it to be a bit longer. The top part is stretchable so no problems with the sizing.
One complaint though is that due to the packing, the feathers were crumpled and doesn't look quite as nice as it should. Also (not really a complaint, but more of a personal preference), the straps do not come with any buckles. You're meant to tie it on your own, but I'm always worried about straps like that coming undone.

Rating: 9/10
Review: This maxi dress looks pretty much like the picture. Very good material. It has an inner lining which stops below the knee. I'm not sure how tall the model is, but for me, the dress itself falls above my ankles. It would have been prettier if it were just an inch or two longer. The top part is stretchable so no problems with the sizing.
UPDATE: I wore it here*click*

Not sure why the dress looks quite short in the picture, but in real life, the length is fine.
Rating: 8/10
Review: This lace cream dress looks exactly like the picture. Decent material. The dress is supposed to be a little bit flowy, so the fitting is fine.
One complaint is that the inner lining is too short. It's also a bit sheer.
UPDATE: I wore it here*click*

This dress is SO pretty!
Rating: 8/10
Review: This red polka-dotted vintage style dress is exactly like the picture. Very good chiffon-y material. Very flowy, very comfortable. The waist and sleeves are stretchable and fits me well.
One complaint is that the inner lining is too short. I may have to wear a happy slip (*high five* to those who know what I'm talking about) underneath.
UPDATE: I wore it here*click* and here*click*

Oh my God, I LOVE this dress! Yes, it's basically the same as the dress above, only with long sleeves.
Rating: 10/10
Review: This green polka-dotted vintage style dress is exactly like the picture. Very good chiffon-y material. Very flowy, very comfortable. The waist and cuffs are stretchable and fits me well.
UPDATE: I wore it here*click*

This is the most dissapointing out of the bunch.
Rating: 4/10
Review: This pink tulle skirt looks pretty much like the picture. The satin material inside is very comfortable and the tulle outside isn't the stiff, itchy kind. The waist, though stretchable, is a little bit tight on me, but not too uncomfortable.
However, the skirt is kind of sheer even with the satin lining inside. Another major complaint is that the skirt has sewing defects. Please refer to the picture below.

The seams are inside-out!! And there are 3 seams!! It is quite noticeable, but still wearable, I suppose. It's still a defect, nonetheless. I docked off quite a lot of marks for that.

This is how they packed the clothes. Each piece is in its individual plastic wrapper. No frills, but that's fine with me considering how ridiculously cheap the prices were. The package took nearly two weeks to arrive, but that's normal considering it's posted all the way from China (to the UK).

All in all, I'm very happy with my purchases. Nearly everything was exactly what I had expected (I must add I've very reasonable expectations) and the quality of the items aren't too bad at all. For the price I paid, I really only have good things to say about AFW.

Total paid for all 7 pieces (including postage): £47.06!!
That means that each piece is slightly less than £7!!!

Have you purchased anything from clothing wholesale websites before?

All you need

 ...is love.

Grey top: Asia Fashion Wholesale
Checkered skirt: H&M
Necklace: New Look

It's the weekend and I decided to meet up with some friends for coffee hot chocolate. I wanted to introduce them to a nice little cafe my boyfriend and I went to last week. It offered quite a good selection of hot chocolate and home made cakes. Unfortunately, when we got there, it was closed. How dissapointing. We ended up in Cafe Nero which wasn't too bad, I suppose.
